Many controversies came about from the New Deal and continue to shape American politics today. Political parries, including Democrats and Republicans, have an on going debate “whether federal or local government should be responsible for various pro- grams.” Liberals favor government action to bring about social and economic reform, where on the other hand conservatives favor less government interference with the emphasis on individual freedom in economic matters.
However, some New Deal programs are supported today because of their popularity. For example, neither party wants to end Social Security. Many people today worry that the funds produced by Social Security won’t be sufficient for their pensions. “The amounts that people pay in through payroll taxes today do not completely pay for pensions.” So it’s a possibility that the Social Security system may run out of money sometime in the future. People live longer than they did in the 1930s, with an increase in the number of people who receive benefits compared to the number of people who pay into the Social Security system.
